Drug overdoses in the U.S. in an aggregated data story

In my past data story assignment, I chose to write about how drug overdose fatalities have piled up in the United States. It was a very eye opening  topic and the data I aggregated within my story was fascinating. It goes to show how much work really needs to be done to stop people from dying everyday from drugs in our country.

  1. One of the sources I used in aggregation was data that was gathered from a study that kept track of how many students and from which specific backgrounds were offered drugs while in school. This was frightening to know that young high school students could get drugs so easily. The easier it is to get a hold of it, the easier it is to use it, the easier it is to get addicted.

Data shows prevalence of drugs on school grounds.
  2. Another source I like was an article that was written off the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s data set on the ranking of the most-used drugs in overdose. This article basically dumbed-it-down for me and helped me further my data story.

Article helps understand data set on drugs used in overdoses.
  3. My favorite source was, of course, one with a visual. It summarized all I needed to know about the drug issue’s statistics through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Human Trafficking takes million of lives everyday Tips on Protect yourself

It is important to understand the meaning of human trafficking so my source of the definition used on the first line of my paper.

As I continue to talk about how many people can be easy picking for human trafficking. I at least give you air traffic information on who tract the data in the air. How many numbers did they track in 2016?

Federal Aviation Administration Tract so many flights and keep data on them and tries to improve the flights for the passengers and cargo make it easier on weather reports from ground control to the pilots

The number of flights handled in 2016 15,631,000 flights number of passengers in 2016 62,345728  this was controlled by the FAA.

The frequently confuse data was the misconception that people may have about human trafficking, so I share the information thanks to U.S. Department of Homeland security.

For a bonus, I thought it will be good to know how to protect oneself and others. If you think human trafficking is going on near you.

International womens day

March 8, 2018 people across the country were protesting for International women’s day. On CBS news they showed a photo gallery of women around the world protesting for women’s rights.

The first photo in the gallery shows a Spanish woman waving a flag. Its the first full day the women go on strike against gender violence.

The second photo in the news gallery shows people gathering around each other in Spain also on March 8, 2018. They stand to march and protest for women’s rights. They also march for their accomplishments and gender equality.

The third photo shows more protesters showing their support by two girls raising flags in a demonstration for women rights in Bilbao Spain.

The fourth photo shows protesters forming triangles with their hands during their demonstration for women’s rights.

The fifth photo shows people holding up a sign that says “The revolution will be feminist or with won’t happen” during their protest for women rights.

Bitcoin back at it again

If you’ve had the pleasure to talk to me you know I like watching the cryptocurrency market. Mostly because I’m waiting for the day that it all comes crashing down. Now I don’t think that cryptocurrencies are all that bad, they’ve actually caused some interesting advancements in the tech world. I just don’t like these coins because they make one of my favorite hobbies very expensive, PC gaming.

Now for a while it seemed as if the altcoin market was going to crash. Not completely mind you, just to a point where it would negligibly impact the GPU market. The price of Bitcoin, the market leader in most expensive single coin, had dropped from almost twenty thousand dollars to about six thousand dollars earlier this year.CMC.PNG

But, it seems as if Bitcoin is bouncing back. The price has risen to just over eight thousand dollars. In fact in one day the price rose one thousand dollars, the last time the price rose that quickly Bitcoin reached its highest price per coin of all time. Luckily it seems the price per coin has been hovering at eight thousand. Lets hope it doesn’t rise any higher to entice new miners to snatch up more GPUs and lead to an even worse shortage.CMC2

My data story was about the rise of cryptocurrency and its impact on the graphics card market. In short its because you can make money off of cryptocurrencies using graphics cards leading to a shortage.

The first of my sources that I used to explain this was a John Oliver video where he explains cryptocurrencies using comedy and simple comparisons so people can understand what they are.

I also used an article by Polygon, a journalism site specializing in video games and tech, that explained where the GPU shortage comes from and what retailers are doing about it.

One of my final resources was an article by Forbes that advises GPU owners on how to turn a profit using their graphics cards. It does a good job of explaining how people can make money off of cryptocurrencies to those who are unfamiliar with the process.
