Quartz data, data we can believe

Quartz is a popular outlet for the data that it shares. While looking on different social media outlets for this news station I came across an interesting Twitter feed where they published data on unemployment (see screenshots) .

In this feed Quartz mentions how Trump boasted about having the African American unemployment rate down in just one year. On the surface this seems like wonderful news, especially for the economy.

Quartz uses its twitter to pull data from reliable sources to back the publication that is being tweeted, which is more than what some folks do! For example, for this article Quartz pulled the data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In its twitter feed Quartz have also included the incarceration number among African American women and men, and if those numbers where counted this 6.7% statistic would be higher. I also liked how Quartz has included the differences in numbers between non black employment and incarceration. There is a wealth of difference.

After viewing there twitter feed and the data they show. It’s safe to assume they have the backing for their claims. It is great to see a news outlet that links data without being biased. One could tell they are considering “The Elements of Journalism.” And that dear reader is a bullseye in the realm of news and data. Until next time.

The gateway to online reporting

Hello Chanel,
I checked several news websites, and they all used twitter to post news. Each twitter post I have viewed from different news websites all included links their websites.

Twitter is used by millions of people in the world, and many people receive their news from Twitter alerts. The social media platform is used for entertainment, news and business.

The Associated Press takes advantage of this opportunity by releasing multiple tweets a day. They not only attract people with their headlines, but they link their articles to bring people to their website. AP includes photos and videos, catching consumer attention immediately.

People are able to receive information about what is going on in the world by turning on push notifications for any news organization on Twitter and any other social media. It helps to get information instantly, especially if in an emergency.

However, receiving emergency alerts can sometimes be bad because there is a slight possibility that it may not be a real alert. For example, the situation in Hawaii where there was a false alarm for a missile…

The Age of Walls

Hello Eric,
As you have mentioned, people migrate and leave their families and countries to improve their lives and to look for better opportunities. In the past, our ancestors migrated to America to better their lives, so why not now?

Change is on the horizon, we all know this. The question is, in what way?

One of the many things that has become a topic of conversation over the last year is the building of a wall on the US and Mexico border.

The Washington Post had a documentary about how borders are rising all over the world, not just here in America. There were different reasons as to why these walls were built.

The most common reason was “security”. Security is a very iffy term these days due to who or what needs to be secured.

In the third part of this series, is when it starts to hit home. The Washington Post begins to discuss what could happen if the wall that President Trump preached about came to fruition.

In a nutshell, farming lands could be affected and other business may begin to suffer as well.

A Border For All of Us

There were a couple pieces in the interactive article  A New Age of Walls  that resonated with me. Living in America talks of walls, borders, and immigration does not go unnoticed, or without having some sort of media coverage.

What is troubling is the propaganda being spread as it relates to immigrants and security. Headlines: “Immigrants bringing danger to “Our” country,” “Immigrants taking jobs,” Immigrants causing crime to go up and taking native citizens jobs.” Well yes! This is true to a certain degree. As there is not a perfect place on Earth.

To deny people the human rights to move freely is absurd. This is why according to the article, “Younger generations are less likely to favor a wall, while non-Hispanic whites are more than twice as likely to favor it as blacks or Hispanics ” (A New Age of Walls). This makes a more visible reality. If the wall goes up the generation below me will tear it down.

The wall will not allow humans to come to a country to escape. And I get the whole ‘well there is a legal way.” But when faced with famine, persecution, rape, slavery etc. I do not know a single person who would be willing to wait until paper work is finalized. Wanting other living people to wait this period is not humane.

When we think about the reason to be rid of DACA it shows little empathy for our fellow humans, take this quote as an example;

“Thousands of migrants now live in a detention center in the Negev desert in southern Israel. Osman Mohammed Ali, a Sudanese refugee from Darfur who was living in Israel, was given two options: leave the country or go to the Holot detention center. Rather than risk his life returning to Africa, he chose the desert facility.”

What our leaders are not realizing is that the immigrants that are fleeing to our country is not doing so to take jobs, and commit crimes. They are fleeing a place of non safety in the hopes they can live the American dream. Where people are not stripped of there basic human rights. How ironic they are trying to come to America, if some only knew how our leader thinks of them. Food for thought.
