A curation example

On Bridgemi I was able to find an example of curation written by Chastity Pratt Dawsey and Mike Wilkinson. This particular article compared the various school stats in Michigan as opposed to other states. The two reporters highlighted an important fact; “Michigan is not getting the school it deserves.”

I feel that after reading Ron French’s story, which is also on Bridgemi, this was a poor example or perhaps a short article. Although the  article had well over 18 paragraphs and only three contextualized links. As the flow of the paragraphs increased to the end of the article the three links were the only sources that were used.

The article also had related links in the middle of certain paragraphs, that could cause some confusion as you are reading. That could be an added value for citizens in the school districts that want to see similar articles on the topic or as mentioned before cause a sense of confusion to the readers.

I do like the way the few links are attributed, it is the same as what we are currently learning and prior to clicking the link you know what you’re going to potentially be seeing. Thus, it is not click bait. Although this is blog post is not about the content of the writing, I think the authors had too much opinion in the writing. This is something that we should limit as much as possible so that our biases and personal beliefs do not run interference with the facts.

How you can find me on socail media

In recent years I haven’t been that active on social media it was never something I personally liked to be on. Recently I have made a twitter account in my journaling class and really seemed to enjoy it. Finding the right username seemed a little tough but I just kept it as simple as zeinabdaher11.

In my journaling class, I learned a lot about TweetDeck. This is a great source I have been using for aggregation and I discovered it while getting the hang of twitter.

Another social media account I have created was my LinkedIn account. Having this social media account helped me connect with people that have the same career interest as me. Also, it’s a great place for job offerings, whether it’s you looking for a job or the job is looking for you.

Aggregation example story

University of Michigan students pay different annual costs depending on which of the three campuses the students are attending. The University of Michigan Ann arbor has the highest annual cost for attendance where the annual cost for in-state students is between $29526 and $31396. Out-of-state students pay annual cost that is more than the double of the in-state students’ annual cost, where the annual cost for out-of-state students is between $62176 and $65508.

The University of Michigan Flint has the second highest annual cost between the University of Michigan campuses. The Flint campus has a total annual cost of $24526, where the  cost is divided between tuition & fee, room & board, books & supplies, transportation, and personal expenses. Lastly, the University of Michigan Dearborn has the lowest annual cost compared to the Ann arbor and Flint campuses. The annual cost for the University of Michigan Dearborn is $13772 for in-state students and $26006 for out-of-state students.

The Drive on the 2019 Detroit Auto Show

auto

An article that I found that uses curation is from The Drive, a news website about automobiles, that talked about the Detroit Auto Show moving the dates for the 2019 Detroit Auto Show to October instead of January.

The article does an alright job curating, adding a few links that backed up his statements. For example, he linked the article that shows that Mercedes-Benz will sit out of the 2019 Detroit Auto Show.

His article is well written, but he weaved in his own opinions, saying that the 2018 Detroit Auto Show was the “most boing and irrelevant Auto Show in his career.” Towards the end of the article, he states that The Drive is for the October move date for the Detroit Auto Show.

There’s also times in the article that needed to be linked. He stated where he got his information and talks about it, like Automotive News, but doesn’t link the original article. I also thought that he needed to add other outside sources, other than articles from his own publication.

A good aggregation example

I found an article in the NY Times website titled NASA’s Webb Telescope Faces More Setbacks, and it is a good aggregation example. This article is a good example of an aggregated story because the article included a set of different resources and information about the covered story.

This article is talking about a NASA project which is a space telescope that has been delayed until 2020. This article is only telling the story of the telescope NASA project and providing multiple contextual links of resources to backup the story and to give the reader further information on the topic.
