The story of my story

Writing a data driven story does have it challenges. Getting reliable sources as evidence for ones story is a challenge. As a journalist, you want to make sure that not only are the sources reliable in regards to facts, but also true and non-biased.

When creating my story for the Flint, Michigan’s water crisis, there were tons of data out there to incorporate into my story. One interesting topic came up with the decision to cut cost was race driven.  That led me to my first source using Data USA to get a better understanding of the demographics. This source outlined the income for the city as well as the individual ethnic groups that are citizens of this city.

Another source I used as primary, is the EPA for Flint. This source was crucial in This article was a timeline story dating from 2011 through 2018developing a fact based story. This particular source, I was able to get information on past and current lead levels in the Flint water systems and how they have decreased over the last seven years.

An additional source I used as a secondary measure was via CNN. This article was a timeline story dating from 2011 through 2018 and the different events that has taken place. This was important to me because I was able to get a complete article that another journalist or reporter has written that helps understand the momentum of what has transpired.

I did use several other sources, but the last two very important sources are from Michigan.gov. This source is very crucial to this type of data story. It was a call to the public to assist with not allowing this issue to go unnoticed or swept under the rug. This link included the address, email and phone number to the Governor of Michigan Rick Synder. Lastly,  an updated article from NBC News that was recent. This article was one of the latest in the developing albeit forgotten story of the crisis the citizens of Flint has been experiencing over the last seven years. Including, the governments decision to stop the bottle water program because lead levels are now within acceptable federal guidelines.

Astronomy & Black Holes

I have a deep love for the stars and so below I will link you to some really cool resourceful sites that I use which teaches on black holes and astronomy in general.

NASA

Here is a very good link to one of NASA’s sites that allows one to really learn a lot in one place about black holes and how their growth may affect their host galaxies.

National Geographic

When one wants information about space-time and or how gravitational waves effect our earth, this is a very good site and its full of new discoveries geographically.

PBS.org

This site talks about the possibilities of a black hole apocalypse and it gives a very informative video about what one could expect if it were to happen to earth.

Astrophysical Journal Letter

This site allows scientists to come together globally with common monthly information about discoveries and calculations. The monthly letter for April 2018, talks about black holes. Oxford University publishes these monthly articles.

Journalism course breeding a skilled pre-med

Though I am not going into journalism, when I took this course I didn’t know that I would come out of it with so much knowledge in how to use different tools. These tools are not reserved for journalists only- I will not let them be.

I am going to take advantage of writing data stories. When I choose to do a write up on new data that comes out about the blood sugar of Americans and its corresponding medication Actos, I will make sure to stick to the facts just like I learned and let the results do the talking. I can even aggregate other sources within my data story to keep my fellow pre-meds up to date across the board on other relevant medical information.

My first data story about Michigan school comparisons.

Another tool I’m thankful for is Timeline JS. I remember how hard I thought constructing my first timeline was, but now I can easily see myself in the future using it as a presentation template. Timeline JS has gotten to be easy for me and I can stir up a quick timeline in minutes.

Coding is something I’ve always wanted to learn, and this course also fulfilled that wish. Now thanks to Code Academy I can do any basic coding and this can also help in presentations and who knows what other doors it might open up in the medical field. Technology and medicine always go great together.

Overall, there is important and useful information to learn everywhere we look. Now it is just up to us as to what we do with that information!

Timeline JS Box Office Summary

I created a Timeline JS about which movies topped the box office in the year so far. You will see in the timeline that Fifty Shades Freed came in fifth place, A Quiet Place in fourth, Peter Rabbit in third, Ready Player One in second, and Black Panther in first place.

It is no surprise to be that Blank Panther is doing so good on the charts, people are in love with all the movie has to offer through experience. Whether it’s the soundtrack, picture, or actors it welcomes every viewer to a good time. It is also revolutionary because this is the first black superhero with their own movie. The Black Panther made history.

Displaying it within my timeline was neat because with a timeline everything is organized and suspenseful in a way. With my box office summary, we are anticipating to see who took the number one spot.
