What is a good lead?

A good lead needs to answer these questions.Who does the story involve? What is the story about? When did the event occur? Where did the event occur? Why did they write a news story about this event? How did it come to be?

The news story I choose appeared on the clickondetroit.com headline: Garden City High School on lockdown after bullet found in school

My news lead answers the who, what, where in the news lead. It drew me in just due to the topic of the lead. The article contains when it occurred and why. It also has how it ended and how it came to be an issue. When an article was googled many pictures and other leads/articles were posted too. I would say this news story was well written and had a good lead because it answered many of the w’s of journalism.

Advocacy for families overcoming disabilities

For my podcast, I chose to focus on supporting the families that have a child with a disability and helping them become a functioning member of society. Along with supporting families, these podcasts by attorney Bernard Krooks focus on special education teachers and programs.

I listen to this podcast while doing homework/lesson plans. It is important to know that others are going through the same things you are. They keep you updated on the latest research, therapy, give tips, and classroom advice. BE THE VOICE!

  • The link provided above has more than just podcasts available. It has planning, newsletters and were to find services. If you need more support they give you advocacy centers.

How was the Voters Turnout in 2016?

I did my fusion table on voter turnout for the whole state of michigan. This is my first time making a fusion table. It was pretty easy and I love the map feature. I was surprised on the lack of turn out for the state in general. Many young adults don’t understand the importance of voting! We need to start educating our youth on voting.

  • The county with the most voters is Wayne County.
  • The county with the least amount of voters is Keweenaw County.

Is having good research skills important?

The journalist research article talks about the approach graduate students get when seeking information in a workplace. Personally, when I want quick answers I pull my phone out and use google. In a generation where technology has become go big people can get answers on the tip of their fingers.

Finding information the traditional way of making phone calls, going through reports, and databases aren’t the first thing young new employees do. When graduating college and wanting to work at a professional job, getting hired is not that easy. Jobs want people who have great research skills.

Personally I relate to this because I’m not that good at researching but as I’m going through colleges I feel like it’s more important to have research skills and not just taking the easy way out because when wanting to find a job after college, it could be difficult if not having right qualities to work.

The article states that college hires always had the quickest answers if they do not know the answer they will ask a co-worker, and not many young employees know how to read reports. Studies show that non-digitized information sources will be disappearing by year as new college students become hired.

The Journalist’s Resource writes an article on how graduates approach gathering information.

Data verification

In my first data story I wrote about how different data collection agencies calculate the graduation rates of certain colleges. Specifically I focused on The National Student Clearinghouse and Third Way. Because the story was about the graduation rates I actually didn’t have to verify the graduation rates of schools or states.

The data I did have to verify were the numbers I used to calculate……. I had to verify numbers like the total student population of schools, the percent of students who were undergraduate, and other volumetrics relating to those colleges in the study. These numbers were used to gain a better understanding of the colleges and students in the data story.

The way that most of my data was verified was actually a fairly simple process. I visited the web pages of the colleges in question and searched for the relevant data. One of the easiest was U of M – Ann Arbor, which had many data points right in their admissions site.
