Multimedia shedding a new light!

Multimedia gives a new take on storytelling for blogs!

Multimedia is such a great and powerful way to showcase various things happening around the world. The good thing about multimedia, is that is very lucrative and has a  plethora of platforms that can be used. One of those plat forms are videos; some of which can be used to showcase the new things that are going on the world today.

One of the things that is constantly changing is the tech world . All of the new technological advancements that are happening at such a rapid pace , should be greatly showcased; so the article called ” The Robot Revolution: The New Age of Manufacturing – Moving Upstream” did.

This video initially grabs my attention by first , talking about topics that are new and constantly changing. The visuals that they have behind it showcasing what is actually going on in the robotic realm are amazing. I believe that actually narrators of the video give a good insight as to how this situation is prevalent to day, how it benefits people, and how it benefits the use of mankind. The video gives us relevance, location, and who is all involved.

Internet and computer use by race

The fusion table I have created is showing internet and computer use percentages by race. This data was retrieved from the U.S. Census Bureau, where the data was collected on October 2012 and released on January 2014.

The data showed that Asians have the highest percentage of  internet and computer use from home, where African Americans has the lowest percentage of internet and computer access from home.

Tuition costs in Michigan

It is always interesting when comparing college cost because they are always on the rise. The prices can change year to year and they are only going up!

We are going to compare sixteen 4-year universities in Michigan. The total cost of a year in college can range from $15,419.36 to $25,204.00 in 2017.

The University of Michigan -Dearborn cost is lowest in-state cost with your total cost being $15,419.36. The room and board are the lowest at U-M Dearborn, at $1,600.00! However, if you want to live in Ann Arbor you are going to pay the most at $9,468.00.

The cost of college can be very overwhelming, but don’t be scared of student debt. There are many ways that can cut the cost. There are scholarships, grants, and final aid is available for those students who qualify. I currently do not pay for room and board. I commute to and from school, so that also saves me money. Don’t be afraid of students debt. You can’t put a price tag on education!

Google Fusion Tables and the Michigan voter turnout

Gathering data off of the internet and arranging it into easily digestible information is an important tool for journalism online. This week we took a look at the Secretary of State’s voter turnout rate for the 2016 election, and turned it into an interactive map using Google Fusion Tables.

The first step was to take the data set from the SOS website and format it leaving only the information we needed.

Then uploading it to Google Fusion Tables we get a map of our data that looks like this.

The map is interactive and will allow the user to click on each individual county to find out the voter turnout for that area.

Quartz data, data we can believe

Quartz is a popular outlet for the data that it shares. While looking on different social media outlets for this news station I came across an interesting Twitter feed where they published data on unemployment (see screenshots) .

In this feed Quartz mentions how Trump boasted about having the African American unemployment rate down in just one year. On the surface this seems like wonderful news, especially for the economy.

Quartz uses its twitter to pull data from reliable sources to back the publication that is being tweeted, which is more than what some folks do! For example, for this article Quartz pulled the data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In its twitter feed Quartz have also included the incarceration number among African American women and men, and if those numbers where counted this 6.7% statistic would be higher. I also liked how Quartz has included the differences in numbers between non black employment and incarceration. There is a wealth of difference.

Unemployment difference between white and black Trumps tweet on Black unemployment

After viewing there twitter feed and the data they show. It’s safe to assume they have the backing for their claims. It is great to see a news outlet that links data without being biased. One could tell they are considering “The Elements of Journalism.” And that dear reader is a bullseye in the realm of news and data. Until next time.
